DORDT ORG
presents art in a broader sense - in and from the region where Holland's oldest town is. Dordrecht, or Dordt, for the insiders, is located in the south west of Holland. Dordrecht is one hour from Amsterdam in the North and one hour from Antwerp, in Belgium, to the south. Rotterdam is only fifteen minutes away. Dordt has a lively artists community and the oldest artists' organization of The Netherlands - called Teekengenootschap Pictura.
The Grotekerk Cathedral is the most important architectural accomplishment of Dordt. Dordrecht has always cherished its cathedral. Ancient city accounts show that in 1284 and 1285 extensions were built onto the north side of the Lady Chapel.
In 1367 the church was raised from the status of parish church to Minster and that also lead to further major building extensions. However, details of this are scarce and one can only surmise over the size and range. Probably the Sanctuary was rebuilt and a choir gallery was installed. The construction of the current tower probably commenced in 1339. The four tower clocks have sent out their well-know sounds since 1460.

progress, but did not destroy existing building.
